Research: Birthplace of Australian Paris Games Medallists
With the conclusion of the Olympics yesterday we still can’t quite grasp how well Australia has done. We’re truly punching above our weight, battling with Olympic giants like The USA and China.
While chatting about Australia’s accomplishments over a competitive game of office table tennis this morning, the question arose – ‘Which city in Australia do you think has produced the most medal winners?’
While we’re very far from being sports experts, we have a passion for data and storytelling.
With that in mind, what do you do when you can’t find the answer to the question? You analyse the data yourself, of course.
So, that’s what we did. We researched the birthplace of all the Australian Paris Games medallists and came to a surprising conclusion. A small suburb of Perth, WA, with a population of less than 10,000 (and which none of us had heard of) was the birthplace of no less than 8 medallists!
What did we find?
-
- The clear winner and Australian suburb which has fostered the most medallists from the Paris games is Subiaco with 8 medallists.
-
- South Brisbane is second with 6 medallists.
-
- On a shared third with 3 medallists is Clayton, Victoria and East Melbourne.
-
- State wise Queensland is the birthplace to most Paris Games medallists, with a total of 20 Australian medallists having been born in the Sunshine state.
-
- Victoria comes in second with 18 medallists, followed by New South Wales with 16.
-
- 14 of our Paris medallists were born overseas.
About the data
We sourced the data from www.olympics.com.au.
Where team sports won medals (Women’s Water Polo, Women’s Basketball and Men’s Track Cycling) we’ve researched the birthplace of each individual in the team according to the data on the www.olympics.com.au site.
We are counting the number of medallists and not the total medal tally.
